Hunting for Food

Japan has a wonderful cuisine, even on a student budget.
Chain restaurants:
      - Sukiya: cheap and cheerful chain serving カレーライス (curry rice), various うどん (udon) dishes, salads, 味噌汁 (miso soup) and so on. All dishes can be ordered in various sizes, and even the smallest makes a sizeable meal. Prices mostly range between ¥300 and ¥700.
      - Kaitenzushi: these conveyor belt sushi joints mostly have a large selection of perfectly decent sushi. Look out for special offer days when a plate of 6 maki can cost as little as ¥100. More on sushi later.

Supermarket meals:
      - Gyomu supa: Look out for the ¥50 onigiri. Cheapest I've found so far.
      - Matsumoto: After 9pm, all sushi and sashimi is marked half-price. They also have okonomiyaki, tempura sweet potato and many other tasty and affordable meals.
     - コンビニ (konbini): Convenience stores in Japan deserve their names many times over, and this also applies to buying prepacked meals. Prices often seem a little higher than gyomu and matsumoto though.

Tip: For drinks, try out the nifty vending machines all around the city. ダイソー (daiso, the ¥100 shops), コンビニ and supermarkets also sell a wide variety of Japanese and Western beverages.

いただきます!
