Chasing Maiko

When I first heard of the comb festival, I was more than a little amused. Does Kyoto really have a matsuri for everything? Apparently, yes. Driven perhaps by curiosity more than anything else, I decided to head down to the Yasui Konpiragu shrine in Gion, unsure of what to expect.
Lo and behold, Japan took me by surprise again after all. Comb festival? Sure! Combs which happened to find themselves in the hair of the largest troupe of maikos (or Geisha apprentices) I have ever seen. Follow a battle between photographers worthy of The Hunger Games...
